In Flagler Beach, the search for a new city manager has taken a potentially controversial turn.

Scott Janke, the former manager of Fort Myers Beach whose July 2009 firing made national headlines, is now a candidate for the same position in Flagler Beach, records show.

And, in the opinion of at least one member of the Flagler Beach City Commission, he’s the top candidate for the job.

Janke was fired by Fort Myers Beach last year after members of the Town Council found out Janke’s wife, Anabela Mota Janke, was working as a porn actress under the name Jazella Moore.

His sudden dismissal brought national media attention, and sparked a debate about whether his wife’s profession warranted his dismissal.

Records show Janke was among four candidates interviewed for the Flagler Beach job during a special meeting last Thursday.

“I think that he’d be a really good city manager,” Flagler Beach commissioner Jane Mealy said. She said Janke’s wife’s profession wouldn’t factor into her decision.

“As far as I’m concerned, it has no impact,” Mealy said.

Mealy predicted that “by next week, people will have forgotten” about any controversy surrounding Janke.

Janke said Tuesday that he and his wife are separated. He said the Flagler Beach City Commission was aware of the prior controversy before he was interviewed.

“For me, it’s a non-issue,” Janke said. He said the commissioners have taken an “intelligent and well-informed” approach to the matter.

“I’m not going to worry about it,” Janke said.

Janke’s résumé shows that he has extensive experience as a planner and city manager, including stints as manager in Seward, Alaska, and Marathon, Fla.

Flagler Beach Mayor Alice Baker would not comment on Janke’s past, or his current status as a candidate for manager.

“I’ve been advised to give no comments at all,” Baker said.

Janke has been called the top contender for the position in local media reports. Asked if she agreed with that assessment, Mealy said her high opinion of Janke had not changed.

“He is for me,” Mealy said, “not for everyone.”
